What is group counseling?
Group counseling is a therapeutic process that takes place when a small group of individuals gather for an agreed-upon time to work towards a goal with a counselor. Individuals in the group come together with a common struggle.
Why group counseling?
Groups have several unique powers that make them the ideal setting for personal change and emotional regulation and emotional support. It is due to these powers that health-related counseling groups are commonly found in hospitals, community centers, schools, and finance/tech companies.
What are some of these unique powers?
- Groups generate a sense of community, belonging, caring, support, and acceptance.
- Supportive groups have the power to instill hope. A person’s sense of hope is one of the best predictors of mental health and adjustment.
- Groups have the ability to induce and reduce powerful feelings.
- Groups have the power to reduce egocentrism. Stress, psychological problems, grief and loss all lend too much control to the ‘ego.’ Participants learn skills to regain and retain perspective. As Maria Popova aptly writes, “Our greatest limitation is not that of imagination but that of perspective – our lens is too easily contracted by the fleeting urgencies of the present, too easily blurred by the hopes and fears of our human lives.”
